When can you get a photo of a toddler in focus with a shutter speed of 1 second?

When they are asleep of course!

    Jeanette,

I really enjoyed meeting you too!

No tripod. I did put the camera on the bed, but I still don't understand how it came out in focus since when I pushed the shutter the camera was pressed into the bed and when I let go it moved up slightly. I was going to switch it to the timer, but I didn't want the loud beep to wake him up!
